Benfotiamine (S-benzoylthiamine -O-monophosphate) is a synthesized variant of thiamin, classified under the group of compounds known as allithiamines. This fat-soluble substance has higher bioavailability and physiological activity compared to thiamin. Benfotiamine increases the levels of thiamin pyrophosphate (TPP) in the bloodstream, which is the active co-enzyme of thiamin, and activates transketolase, an enzyme vital for the regulation of normal glucose metabolism.
